10th annual Hancock County Special Olympics charity golf tournament May 17, 2014 at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. Register by emailing your team members’ names to: specialolympics@blanchardvalley.org. The cost is $70 per person and includes Green fees / Cart / Bag Tag / a golf hat / and a meal. We’ll also have hole competitions, a 50/50 raffle, and gifts galore donated by several local businesses. Remember, golf with friends, win prizes and support a good cause. Hancock County Special Olympics is independently funded by donations and events like this. The Lost Arts Festival is Saturday and Sunday (May 17-18) at Seven Eagles Historical Education Center, 16486 Wapakoneta Road, Grand Rapids, Ohio. The historical site is a mile south of Grand Rapids and a mile north of US 6. Admission and parking are free, but donations are encouraged. Longer version: GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio - Try primitive archery, see pioneer-era reenactors and craftsmen and enjoy nature at Cricket Fro Pond with your own picnic lunch during the Lost Arts Festival May 17-18 at Seven Eagles Historical Education Center. The historical area is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday (May 17) and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday (May 18) at 16486 Wapakoneta Road, Grand Rapids, Ohio, a mile south of Grand Rapids and a mile north of US 6. Admission and parking are free, but donations are encouraged. "Bring your kids and grandkids, and a picnic lunch," said event coordinator Stewart Orr of Bowling Green. "It's a perfect place to enjoy a family day. We'll have activities for the kids, and the adults will have a good time too." Among the craftsmen and women demonstrating their skills will be Stanley Zelasko of Sylvania and his apprentice, grandson Grant Zelasko, who plan to demonstrate leather skills as well as scrimshaw work on horns and fire starting with flint and steel. Zelasko's work currently is featured in a display at the Holland branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. Brian Jensen of Perrysburg will be demonstrating his skills creating Native American-style beadwork, and Sarah Badenhop of Napoleon plans to demonstrate candle dipping the pioneer way. Among the other skills visitors can see are a wheelwright making a wooden wheel, a soap maker, flint knappers and a blacksmith forging iron in the historic blacksmith shop. More displays may include campfire cooking, hand sewing and other glimpses into the lives of pioneers. Along with a visit to an authentic 1800 log cabin, the homestead will feature animals to see and pet, and then visitors can tour the rest of the grounds which includes a Native American longhouse, trapper's cabin and Scottish tavern. Visitors can join Mike Rupert to try their hand at primitive archery, borrow a cane pole and drop a line or paddle canoes around the island in Cricket Frog Pond. And then they can choose a scenic spot, spread out a blanket and enjoy they lunch they bought along while listening to the cricket frogs and wildlife.
