BLOOMVILLE OCTOBERFEST

From 12:00PM to 5:00PM

Annual Oktober Fest is Seneca County Park District's largest fundraiser BLOOMVILLE - German food and music, wagon rides through the park and a farmers market will highlight the annual Seneca County Park District Oktober Fest noon-5 p.m. Oct. 4 at Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve, Bloomville. The main fundraiser for the county parks, the German festival is hosted by the non-profit Friends of the Seneca County Park District. Admission is free. This year at the historical log cabins Linda Kirgus is to be spinning alpaca wool into yarn while people can visit with the alpaca outside in the grass. "She will have yarn for people to buy from the alpaca," said Karin Brown, food committee chairwoman for the event. Food is to be served in two lines this year to cut down on lines, she said. On the menu is bratwurst and weinerle (hot dogs), she said, as well as other German favorites such as hot German potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, homemade desserts and hot or cold cider. "And we'll have the gigantic pretzels made a German baker too," Brown said. "It's all authentic German food." People can sit down under a tent to eat their food and listen to the German music of the 25-member Deutschmeisters band, which will be playing 1-4 p.m. After lunch - or before - visitors can climb onto a wagon for a narrated tour of the nature preserve. Tours circle the nature preserve to show off the large lake, three ponds, wetland areas, woods, grasslands and trails, and to inform visitors about the preserve's history and importance today to wildlife. Children can enjoy making old-fashioned toys and doing crafts as well as carving pumpkins, getting their faces painted and watching puppet shows. Visitors can stroll through the farmers market to find end-of-season fresh produce as well as fall decorations, flowers and other items. The park district's rock collection is to be on display in the nature center, and blacksmithing demonstrations are to take place in the historical blacksmith shop near the cabins as well as basket-making demonstrations.
