Don't forget the new ice rink in downtown Tiffin opens today!  Free ice skating starts at 5pm until 10pm.  You can also skate Saturday from 11am to 10pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm from now until the end of February.

To celebrate the new rink, ice sculptors will be creating cool pieces of art on Saturday beginning at 11am.  Silver Blades from Findlay will perform at 2:30pm and Elsa from Frozen will make an appearance around 3pm.

Plans for Marathon Petroleum’s 1,200-space parking garage off of East Lincoln Street were approved Thursday by the Findlay City Planning Commission, and construction is expected to start in April.  Marathon says it will begin construction of a second parking garage after the construction of the 800-space parking garage off of East Sandusky Street is finished.  Together, the two five-story parking garages will give Marathon 1,000 more parking spaces than it had before, or a total of 2,500 parking spaces including ground spaces.  The new structures are part of Marathon’s overall plan to add $80 million worth of downtown buildings: two office buildings, the two parking garages and possibly a hotel.

The Findlay City Planning Commission has also recommended to the Findlay City Council to approve zoning to allow a bus garage to be constructed along Broad Avenue and south of Bigelow Avenue.  The planning commission made its recommendation for the change from single-family housing to light industrial use conditional on the 13 acres being sold to Findlay City Schools.  The school board has agreed to buy the property for $160,000, but the deal has not yet closed.  School officials are awaiting results of site and soil inspections.  One citizen objected to the using the site for a bus garage citing traffic concerns and possible fuel storage tanks.

With a growing local economy and increased student enrollment, Findlay City Schools are considering modular classrooms to ease the strain on kindergarten through fifth-grade classes.  According to Superintendent Ed Kurt, the are 25 students in every kindergarten class across the district…Kurt said first grade has the largest number of students in the district, followed by second grade.  District Treasurer Mike Barnhart said a modular is “a lot more fiscally responsible” than new construction.  Funds from the district’s permanent improvement levy could be used toward the modulars.

The Vanlue school board has approved the resignation of Superintendent Rodney Russell, effective August 1.  The sixty three year old  Russell  said he plans to retire.  Russell began his career at Van Buren as an elementary teacher and then moved to Vanlue School. He was principal at Vanlue High School, and during that time also served as girls basketball coach and athletic director.

Johnny Boy’z is bringing the fair to you year round.  The new Fostoria restaurant will feature a variety of fair style sandwiches, chicken, fries, hush puppies, funnel cakes and all-you-can-eat fish every Friday.  Johnny Boy’z is owned by John and Terry Arnder of Fostoria, along with their sons and daughter in-law.  The new eatery plans to open in mid-February in the former Garcia’s Mexican restaurant on Sandusky Street in Fostoria.

The publication Restaurant Business has named Findlay as the number four ranked market for restaurant growth.  The 2014 Restaurant Growth Index says that the restaurant industry growth is driven by two factors:  tourism and consumer desire for gathering places.  Findlay landed the lofty spot because of recent economic growth and the presence of Marathon Petroleum and Cooper Tire corporate headquarters.  Topping the list is the Kahului metro in Hawaii.  At the bottom?  Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Another natural gas pipeline project is targeted to run through Wood County…The Nexus Pipeline is a 250 mile project that runs from southwestern Ohio to Michigan and Canada.  The plan has led residents to questioning a need to run the large pipeline through their property.  DTE Energy and Spectra Energy hope the 1.5 billion dollar project can be in service by the end of 2017.  An exact route is still being calculated and currently encompasses a 600-foot-wide study corridor that will be refined over the next year.

With Ohio’s prison population again approaching record levels, prison’s chief Gary Mohr said the state is considering early emergency release of prisoners.  As of December 29, Ohio’s prisons held 50,641 inmates which is 31 percent above design capacity of the prisons.  Mohr will be requesting changes to the Ohio Revised Code on the emergency release of inmates.  It has been emphasized by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction that the early release will be an option only if overcrowding continues and money is not available for additional beds.

A boil water advisory is in effect for all residents on Winthrop Drive in Findlay, while repair work is underway on a nearby water main.  The advisory will also affect a number of residences on West Sandusky Street and one residence on Glessner Avenue.  The city recommends that affected people boil their water for at least one minute before using it or drinking it.  The advisory will be in place until further notice.

An Arcadia woman was injured in a single-vehicle accident on Ohio 12 near Marion Township Road 212 early Saturday morning.  Fifty-two year old Janet Tooman of Arcadia was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer when she lost control on the icy roadway.  The sport utility vehicle slid off the north side of the road into a power pole.  Tooman was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital by Hanco Ambulance. She was cited for operation without reasonable control, the sheriff’s office said.

The University of Findlay was recently recognized as having one of the most affordable four-year online programs in Ohio.  Onlinecolleges.net, which keeps tabs on such programs throughout the nation and provides information about the educational option, listed the university at number ten  for having one of the lowest annual tuition prices for Ohio residents, at $10,394.  Other area universities on the list are The University of Northwest Ohio at number three.  Bowling Green State University is fourth and Tiffin University is nineteenth.
